10 Open World Game Tropes We NEVER Want To See Again
3. Needless Tutorials
Video games were popularized 50 years ago, and the majority of gamers are probably familiar with how to play them by the time they boot up their first open-world title. If not, they’re likely intuitive enough to figure it out as they go and engaged enough to have some fun in the process.
That’s why it’s such a needlessly archaic and aggravating problem whenever our initial hours of playtime are impeded by dull, redundant, and overly demanding tutorials that reveal obvious mechanics, information, and tips.
At the very least, developers should do away with telling us about basic movements, as well as what health, stamina, and special ability meters mean. That's doubly true if the developer also forces us to complete mundane tasks to prove that we comprehend those basic concepts.
Alternatively, they could take a page out of fighting game franchises such as Mortal Kombat and Tekken by providing a separate tutorial section in the main menu.
Plus, we’re a quarter of the way into the 21st century, so there are numerous “how-to” guides, YouTube videos, and online forums to answer any questions gamers might have. Thus, pressing players to begin their journey with obligatory tutorials is totally superfluous.
