4. Shadows Of The Damned - ...And Justine For All

There was a lot riding on Shadows of the Damned before its release. When the likes of Shinji Mikami, Suda51 and Akira Yamaoka are behind it, it had a fair weight of expectation to live up to.

For the most part it, it did. Playing like a hybrid of Resident Evil 4 and No More Heroes (Mikami and Suda's pedigree, respectively), it was an entertaining romp through the world of demons backed by the chap behind Silent Hill's creepy tunes.

But it wasn't without its weirdness, either. No, we're not going to be talking about the Big Boner bit, don't worry.

More how the boss fight against the mute Justine dramatically shifts the gameplay tone completely. Up to this point, it had played... well, like Resident Evil 4. So it'd be fair to say that no one was expecting a Cuphead-style switch (for modern reference, it wasn't out by this point) to a side-scrolling shooter.

It's not game-breakingly difficult, nor a terrible portion of the game. Just massively out of nowhere for a game already established as an over-the-shoulder shooter.
