8. Grinding Achievements/Trophies

The introduction of the achievement and trophy systems for Xbox and PlayStation gave players even more ways to enjoy their favourite games. Instead of just finishing the story and maybe collecting some of the hidden items, there were now official ‘tasks’ to complete to encourage you to keep playing way longer than the standard 12 hour campaign.

However, some developers decided to add achievements with ridiculous requisites that were nothing more than grinding. Many achievements involve killing a certain amount of enemies, but some games took that too far and expected you to kill thousands of them, which would mean you playing for possibly hundreds of hours.

In the awful Godzilla PS4 game, one achievement asked you to fully upgrade every single character – which involved playing the repetitive campaign several dozen times for each monster.

Achievements that involve grinding in online modes are even worse – having to play an empty online mode for hours and hours just to get a little icon on your gamer profile is infuriating. There’s a reason they were called 'achievements' – it was supposed to be something extra to do to give you a sense of accomplishment.

Nowadays, spending hours just to get one trophy just gives you a feeling of ‘Why did I waste my time on that?’
