10 Outdated Video Game Design Tropes That Must Die In 2017
4. 'Sprint Meters' And Bad Running Mechanics
No one likes walking in video games. Why would you walk if there are cars, boats, tanks and planes available to use? If players do find themselves on foot without the ability to fast travel, you can guarantee they’ll be spamming the ‘run’ button the entire time, or doing some sort of jump/hop/roll to go faster.
Walking is slow, which is why it’s irritating when certain games only let you run for a short period of time. Sprinting is something you can upgrade in games like Saints Row, but in franchises like Call of Duty you can only run for a couple of seconds at a time.
Considering you’re supposed to be a highly trained solider (and in the more recent games, have abilities such as wall-running and double jump), it’s ridiculous that you can only run for this short amount of time.
The challenge in Call of Duty is having multiple enemies attacking you at once with only a limited arsenal to defend yourself with, so why stick a restriction on running speed? All it does is drag out the sections where you have to go through a corridor to get to another gun battle.
