BioShock Infinite was the smash hit of 2013, lauded by critics for its gorgeous setting and complex character-led narrative. Its gameplay wasn’t quite so praised, as some considered it a step back compared to its predecessors thanks to a two-weapon limit and fewer upgrade options.

Amongst the otherwise standard array of guns, however, one weapon quite literally elevates the entire combat experience.

The skyhook is a magnetic arm-mounted device which allows the user to traverse skylines: elegant metal rails which twist through the skies of Columbia like the world’s most dangerous roller-coaster.

Your skyhook lets you launch yourself towards these skylines and use them to zip around battlefields, surveying the skirmishes below as you glide magnificently through the air. You can even fire your weapons while in flight. It’s exhilarating, turning otherwise flat combat arenas into dynamic vertical spaces.

Once you tire of zooming around like an angry wasp, you can leap back down to ground level to strike at your foes directly. That’s right: the skyhook also works as a melee weapon, with its spinning saw-like rotors making for some of the most brutal kills in any shooter. Infinite may have left the underwater city behind, but the skyhook is certainly enrapturing.
