10 Overhyped Video Game Storylines That Actually Went Nowhere

7. Ethan's Blackouts - Heavy Rain

Batman Arkham Origins Shiva
Quantic Dream

In true David Cage fashion, Heavy Rain is more about shocking plot twists than consistency in the story. The best example of that is the conclusion to Ethan's, one of the main characters, blackouts that has infuriated the players ever since the game came out.

Throughout the story, Ethan suffers from random blackouts that cause him to lose consciousness and awake somewhere else with no memory of how he got there.

The blackouts are deliberately placed throughout the game in a way that would suggest Ethan is the Origami Killer responsible for the kidnapping of his son Shaun.

The setup seems like an exciting twist that will explore Ethan's psyche and ultimately showcase how he transforms from a struggling father into a disturbed killer.

However, David Cage must've thought the twist became too obvious because, at the last minute, he pulled a switcheroo and revealed a different character to be a killer, not only making the blackouts lose all purpose but also creating inconsistencies in the overall storyline, placing characters in the wrong places at the wrong time, and making it impossible for the actual Origami Killer to do the things he's supposedly responsible for in the game.

Disappointing and plot-breaking! Just how we like it!
