10 Overlooked PS4 Horror Gems You're Missing Out On
4. Observer
Bloober Team's follow up to Layers of Fear, Observer, is a far more confident and polished psychological horror game. Dropping the Gothic sensibilities for straight up cyberpunk terror, the title wears its influences on its sleeve, right down to getting Blade Runner's own Rutger Hauer to voice the player character.
Set in 2084, players adopt the role of an Observer, detectives who specialise in hacking brains with a "Dream Eater" in order to interrogate suspects and solve crimes. This device awards the game with a far more robust set of mechanics than the relatively-simple Layers of Fear, boasting great hacking mini-games and plenty of puzzles to solve, although there are still a few forgettable stealth sections to slip through.
The bulk of what you'll be doing is exploring this sickly world, however, speaking to NPCs and slipping in and out of intense surreal nightmares. It's a hard game to sell unless you've seen it in motion, as while the plot and gameplay are solid, it's the rich atmosphere and believability of this haunting environment that's the biggest draw.
