10 Overlooked Video Games That Were WAY Ahead Of Their Time
3. Doom 3
The black sheep of the Doom franchise, Doom 3 was a departure from what many Doom fans loved so much about the series, into a more survival-horror-based shooter.
And it was amazing.
Sure the flow was completely different from where the series had come from and where it would go afterward. But the more vulnerable protagonist, the revolutionary lighting effects, and the more terrifying take on classic Doom baddies, paved the way for a lot of what would be implemented in Doom 2016 and Eternal. Except for the vulnerable protagonist part - the Doom Slayer would eat these levels for breakfast - but I digress.
Doom 3 was not what fans wanted from the third Doom game at all, which is why this entry has mostly been forgotten in favor of its more fast-paced, psychotic younger siblings. But it's gained a cult following all its own for how ahead of the curve it was, which can be seen in the Resident Evil Remakes, which have a LOT of Doom 3 in their DNA.
If you want Doom to properly frighten you, then you play Doom 3.
