10 Overpowered Items That Broke Video Games

8. Yojimbo - Final Fantasy X

Whether or not Yojimbo technically counts as an ‘item’ per se is up for debate. But he’s a summon, an ability that can be used to turn the tide in particularly tough battles in Final Fantasy X. Unlike most summons that operate under normal damage and defence rules, Yojimbo’s attacks vary based on the depth of your pockets.

He’s a sword for hire, and will adjust the power of his offense depending on how well you pay him. Stump up a few hundred gil, and he’ll sic his dog Diagoro on your enemies, shaking his head at your poultry attempt at a tribute. Offer him a lot more though, and he’ll perform Zanmato, an attack so powerful it can kill any boss instantly.

It’s useful when you find yourself struggling against a really tough foe (Maester Seymour seems to be a popular target for a lot of players), but once the option is there to effectively pay your way through areas, it kind of defeats the purpose of the game. You don't need to grind or level up or meticulously plan your tactics, so long as you've made enough money from Blitzball trophies, Zanmato will be there to bail you out.
