10 Overpriced Video Game BS You Should AVOID
1. The Sims 4's DLC Totals Over $1,000
Ever since its inception, the bread and butter of The Sims franchise hasn't been the mere selling of the initial retail game, but rather the never-ending avalanche of DLC, from expansion packs to minor DLC drops containing basic cosmetic items for your in-game homes.
The Sims 4 celebrates its 10-year anniversary next September, and it was recently calculated that for players to purchase every single piece of paid DLC released for the game, they'd need to splash out just over $1,000.
Now to be completely fair to EA, the base version of The Sims 4 went free-to-play last year, so you don't need to spend a single penny to experience the vanilla iteration of the game.
But even so, that those craving the full suite of available themes and cosmetics need to drop the equivalent of around 15 full-price AAA games is insane.
While it's simple business sense that a game played by 70 million people would feature DLC of some kind, there's just no reality where this represents good value.
Then again, you don't easily get to $5 billion in lifetime revenue by being stridently pro-consumer.
Perhaps anticipating potential blowback for The Sims 5, though, EA has already confirmed that it will launch as a free-to-play game, taking a slight sting out of the microtransaction barrage.
