4. Persona 5 Royal

This one has to kick off with the traditional Personal 5: Royal caveat which is that I’m really sorry I’m telling you the best version of a game is the new one that came out when you probably already spent 100 or so hours in its vanilla version.

Now, there’s nothing inherently wrong with Persona 5, it’s also a fantastic game, but when we’re talking about perfect video game narratives we can’t leave out the impact that Royal’s new storyline has on making this one flawless. This is largely due to newcomers Kasumi Yoshizawa and Takuto Maruki who collectively introduce what I would argue as one of the most well written antagonists and fascinating high stakes fantasy stories in any medium. I really don’t want to spoil any of the twists and turns that lie ahead for you here, so I’ll just say the narrative progression, mature themes, and relationships are handled so expertly.

The sheer length and scope of this game also ensures the characters are fully realised letting you understand their beliefs, motivations, and intentions.

The unfolding narrative and its implications is deeply affecting and while it’s a story that’s been explored before elsewhere, Persona does so with its trademark charm and unwavering earnestness that tugs at your heartstrings every step of the way.
