10 Perfect Video Game Sequels You'll Never Get
4. Pokemon: Great War
Why Not?
Pokémon has never been a lore-heavy franchise - nor have Nintendo ever been ones to address many overarching fan theories in their games.
'Pokémon: Great War' is thus my own title, but it refers to a fan theory many have latched onto over the years, describing a massive, catastrophic battle that took place before all the entries in the franchise.
Explaining why the majority of the male population is either older or missing, why there are so many hospitals and gyms and even why Lt. Surge mentions how electric Pokémon "saved [him] during the war!", it's something many fans adore, yet implementation on Nintendo's part would mean co-adapting a framework they never intended.
What Would Be Perfect?
Mostly as a way to please fans of Pokémon young and old, it'd allow Nintendo to release a new instalment that had a focus on the original 150 i.e. the ones everybody lost their minds over during Pokémon GO's popularity. In a stripped down world where it's up you to chart the remaining Pokémon after or during the final days of the war, there could be all sorts of new capturing techniques and combat TMs you'd get to create and teach to your team.
Not to mention, the inverse of this would see you taking part IN the Great War itself, allowing Nintendo to design a handful of precursor Pokémon that get wiped out in the event.
Providing a narrative groundwork to how the world of Pokémon came to be would certainly be interesting, but if it was going to happen, Nintendo would need to take care that Great War doesn't get too dark. Reframing the tone of Pokémon in this way isn't too dissimilar to how Rogue One makes the original Star Wars flicks more like post-war tales, as oppose to fantastical escapist sci-fi.
Confirming that fans have been right all along would be awesome - it's just then up to Nintendo to make rediscovering the 150 a really interesting thing to do all over again.
