10 Platformer Video Games Nobody Admits Are Better Than Mario
5. Little Nightmares
Little Nightmares is one of the most underrated games of the current generation. It sets you in the shoes a tiny girl in a yellow slicker that evokes Georgie from It. You start off in a dark area with no background information as to where you are. Eventually you realise you're aboard a mysterious ship called The Maw, which is inhabited by large, lardy characters that want you dead.
You're forced to sneak around the 3D environments, while climbing upon tables, chairs, pots, doors, vents, and much more. The game is surprisingly creepy and tense, especially if you play with headphones in (and you should).
While most platform games have you simply falling into an abyss if you miss a jump, Little Nightmares is so much more frightening and anxiety-inducing. You won't be falling down any dark holes, but if you miss a jump from a table to the drawers, you'll be grabbed and eaten by one of the fleshy monsters.
Little Nightmares is just that, nightmare-fuel, but in all the right ways. The animations are great as your character moves in and out of the gorgeous environments, and few other games come anywhere near its level of polish, atmosphere, and genuine feeling of fear and dread.
