10 Platformer Video Games Nobody Admits Are Better Than Mario
6. Inside
A follow-up to indie darling Limbo was never going to be easy, especially when it took six years to arrive. However, Playdead shocked everyone with a game that was reminiscent of Limbo, but superior in every possible way.
Inside retained the aesthetic of Limbo, albeit vastly polished and improved upon, and added in some striking reds for effect. You can see the technical leaps the studio has made between games, and Inside overflows with atmosphere and tension as a result.
The game is set in a creepy world where you play as a little boy, digging deeper into a facility to uncover a mystery. That's a vague description, because Inside is a pretty vague game that lets you fill in the blanks it purposefully leaves open.
Mind-blowing story aside however, platforming is as close to perfection as you'll find. Gameplay serves the story and vice versa, in ways most games can only hope to achieve. Not only that but the animations are some of the best you'll see, whether indie platformer or AAA blockbuster.
Inside is a very special game - the type that only comes along every generation. A mesmerising blend of story, gameplay, music, and world-building. Exactly what a modern platformer should be.
