10 Platformer Video Games Nobody Admits Are Better Than Mario
4. Mega Man 2
Some people like to say "gameplay is king", meaning gameplay is paramount to any video game, and if gameplay isn't up to scratch, then no amount of story or graphic fidelity can make up for it. While there is some hyperbole in that statement when applied to modern games, it certainly rang true in the 80's.
While the original Mega Man created the blueprint for the blue bomber to follow for some 30 years to follow, it was Mega Man II that perfected the formula. The sequel added better audio and visuals, passwords, and new power-ups, while retaining the innovative non-linear structure of the missions. Each boss feels unique and memorable, while providing Mega Man with a fun array of weapons to use in the other levels.
It's a masterclass in game design and, while being difficult, it's far better than its predecessor at presenting a fair challenge. It is the pinnacle of platforming in the 8-bit era, and that's no small feat considering the competition, including Mario himself.
Incredibly, Mega Man II is, to this day, still the best-selling game in the series. Which means, just maybe, gameplay is indeed king and class is permanent.
