10 Problems With The Metal Gear Series Nobody Wants To Admit

6. The Controls Kinda Suck

Whilst it's swapped out its main character multiple times, messed with the timeline and €“ with the upcoming Phantom Pain €“ abandoned its long-running principal voice cast, there are some things that never change about Metal Gear. Namely the controls, with have followed pretty much the exact same set up as they had in the original MSX game, adapting only to different consoles and technologies when necessary. Obviously there are tweaks when new aspects of gameplay are added, but seriously. Somebody who has played no video games since the first Metal Gear Solid would probably get on fine if you plopped them in front of Guns Of The Patriots, albeit confused as to why Snake now has a grey mullet and why Otacon appears to be a tiny robot with a digital camera strapped to it. Not necessarily a bad thing, if the controls were any good to begin with. Being able to pick up and play any Metal Gear game without difficulty as a long-time fan is cool, but those controls are inherently clunky and awful. Knowing how to use them is knowing how to get past the tank steering, the inventory system, the fixed camera that means instant death all the time.
