10 Progressive Characters Who Prove Video Games Aren't Bigoted

10. Samus Aran - Metroid

First appearing in 1986, Metroid€™s Samus Aran, as far as many are concerned, was the first female action hero in games. Her gender throughout was actually unknown, and the reveal came at the very end of the game. It was considered a positive move on behalf of the developers, showcasing a strong female lead that had a broad appeal opposed to the male dominated games of the time and proving that, in terms of kicking ass, gender didn€™t matter. It was a landmark in history and Aran has continued to be an icon for feminism within gaming. She is one of the few characters who has managed to steer clear of the usual overt sexualisation that surrounds so many female characters and has ensured her place as a firm favourite of all Nintendo€™s iconic characters.
