10 Promising Video Game Movies That ALMOST Happened

9. Gears Of War

Halo Master Chief
Epic Games

Gears Of War launched in 2006 as an Xbox 360 exclusive and blew up as a pop-culture phenomenon right after. Stuart Beattie eas hired to write a movie, in what was aimed to be a prequel to the first game, covering the events of 'Emergence Day'.

In 2008, Len Weisman eventually signed on as director. The production was gearing up to be a big event film with pre-production well underway.

What Happened?

Then the film stalled for several years with producer Wyck Godfrey blaming the grim climate of modern war for the movie cooling down. After that, the budget was whittled down and the movie heavily reworked. Weisman soon exited.

The film was never officially cancelled as it is currently being reworked as we speak - but an actual desire for it has chilled - not helped that the franchise is not the fire-hot brand it once was either.

Why Was It Promising?

Weisman is hit-and-miss as a director, yet his stylish flair and action sense would've been a spot-on match for a big budget Gears adaptation made in 2008. Oh well...
