10 Promising Video Game Movies That ALMOST Happened
6. American McGee’s Alice
Released in late 2000, this was an imaginative and nightmarish continuation of the Alice In Wonderland storyline; the plot picks up after the books with Alice's parents perishing in a fire, then consequently she's committed to an insane asylum - cheerful stuff, hey?
Straight after release, a movie deal was quickly struck up with Dimension Film's producing, Wes Craven set to direct, John August writing and Sarah Michelle Geller starring. In the early 2000's you couldn't have a hotter combination of attached talent for a genre piece.
What Happened?
The clear-cut reason never emerged but resulted in pre-production stalling for four years with several writers coming and going and Craven eventually jumping ship.
Gellar was steadfast about staying aboard, even obtaining the game rights herself when Dimension abandoned it - but nothing came of it and the project shuffled off eventually.
Why Was It Promising?
That premise is just bubbling for a cinematic spin - with surreal set-pieces and a darkly clever subversion of the classic story. Plus Gellar at her Scream Queen peak and Craven having a chance to return to his sublime surreal storytelling roots (akin to Nightmare On Elm Street) were drool-worthy.
