Development hell is a destination no major title wants to find itself in; when production becomes a slog and the project doesn't move forward, it can drastically cut the game's anticipation levels and chance of success.

Yet with games getting more expensive to make and market competition ever-increasing, the challenge of getting a title to completion is only getting more difficult. Often times, a game is announced at E3 or another gaming event, only to retreat into the background while other major releases make their presence known in consumer hands.

Perhaps the developer found themselves occupied with another project? Or maybe the publisher no longer sees their product as financially viable? In any case, games can go many years without offering any new details to fans.

There's a wide variety of games currently behind closed doors; we haven't had a peep from their developers, nor an update on their overall progress for some time. With the next generation of consoles imminent, the following ten games may be forced to choose between going to new hardware or getting cancelled altogether. Let's take a look...

10. Halo Infinite

Microsoft

Starting off the list is Halo Infinite; the game Microsoft is banking big on to move units of the newly released Xbox Series X. It's been in the pipeline for five years now and has some big expectations to meet.

Infinite's troubles began with the 2015 release of Halo 5: Guardians; fans were deeply critical of both its weak campaign, story and the inclusion of REQ system microtransactions. The game's disappointment's caused 343 Industries to suffer a major downturn in their reputation.

Since then, the developer has gone back to the drawing board, trying to figure out a way to make up for Guardians while maintaining their own vision for the franchise. When Halo Infinite was announced, it adopted the franchise's traditional art style and has now seemingly thrown out many of the story threads of the franchise's fifth entry.

It's not as stagnant as other films on this list, but Halo Infinite's development has proven rather troublesome, particularly in recent years. The game has now gone through two directors leaving the project; first it was Tim Longo and now Chris Lee. This doesn't bode well for the final release, which has been pushed back several times over, leaving the Xbox Series X without a killer app on launch day.
