10 Promising Video Game Sequels Stuck In Development Hell

Spawned in the wake of Dark Souls and other fantastical franchises, Lords of the Fallen was a competent if ultimately underwhelming title that arrived in 2014. Despite its place as a middle-market title, it was able to gain some traction among PS4 and Xbox One players. Though 2014 wasn't exactly the best year for the eighth generation in general.

Players take control of Harkyn, a convicted criminal released to tackle the invasion of demonic forces. The game's inspirations were obvious with its slow, tactical combat, non-linear design and a wide range of choices when developing your upgrades and overall playstyle.

Lords of the Fallen would manage to sell over 900,000 units by May 2015; not quite the figures of AAA games, but enough to be financially successful on the lower AA scale. Because of this surprising success, a sequel was greenlit, but still has yet to materialise.

Lords of the Fallen 2 was set to arrive in 2017 with a healthy three-year development cycle, but that never happened. Deck13 Interactive had moved on to The Surge, leaving CI Games in charge of development. But as development dragged on, this company also left the project in May 2019.

LOTF2 has settled at Hexworks, a European developer who aims to get the game out on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X in 2021.
