10 Rare Versions Of Video Games You Didn't Know Exist
2. Daikatana (Game Boy Colour)
Daikatana will be a name familiar to more seasoned gamers. Developed by Doom creator John Romero under his Ion Storm studio, it saw a troubled development and became notorious for a marketing poster, boasting that “John Romero’s About To Make You His Bitch”. It largely became seen as an egotistical venture by Romero.
It eventually released in 2000 across N64 and PC to highly negative reviews and is widely considered one of the worst games ever made. But what many people aren’t aware of is that a Game Boy Colour version also exists, featuring drastically differing gameplay at Romero’s request.
Published by Kemco and only released across Europe in September 2000, it featured similar gameplay to Legend of Zelda and utilised a top-down perspective rather than an FPS approach.
It received much better critical reception than its counterpart, with reviewers praising the puzzles and visual approach. So if you ever considered trying the PC edition to see “How bad can it actually be?”, your time would be much better spent here.
