Though God of War may not strictly be a franchise reboot, for all intents and purposes it functions as a reboot-sequel (or "rebootquel"), nodding to the previous games in the series but largely standing on its own as the beginning of a new franchise.

Cleverly, though, the game neither retreads ground from prior games nor feels overly indebted to what happened before, forging a new path that's respectful of its lineage but fundamentally its own beast.

While there are certainly many successfully rebooted gaming franchises out there - namely Tomb Raider, Doom and Wolfenstein - not one of them feels as uniformly, brilliantly assured as this. It is the rarest, purest instance of a development team in full mastery of their craft and consequently delivering the boldest AAA experience currently available for Sony's current hardware.
