10 Reasons To Get Excited About Warhammer 40K: Darktide

8. Abhumans

The Warhammer universe plays host to a range of species a little further along the evolutionary chain than your regular human, the most recognisable being Ratlings and Ogryn.

At the name suggests, Ratlings are a group of small abhumans with keen eyes, quick reactions, no need for shoes and are Definitely Not Hobbits in case any lawyers are reading this. Ogryn on the other hand are huge bulls of creatures, even larger than Space Marines and slower than a Titan's turning speed.

Both would be in abundance on a Hive like Tertium. From the teaser trailer we already see something like an Ogryn in the hordes of the undead making it possible that we might either get to play as them or end up facing our former allies as puss filled zombies. Great.

These two species would make for an interesting enemy to face. An enemy Ratling could move unseen, coming through air ducts to surprise the players. An Ogryn meanwhile would be your classic tank, putting out tremendous amounts of melee damage and soaking up round after round without going down.

My passion for all things Sci Fi goes back to my earliest days, when old VHS copies of Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet gripped my tiny mind with their big, noisy vehicles and terrifying puppets. I'd like to say my taste got more refined over the years, but between the Warhammer, Space Dandy and niche Star Wars EU books, perhaps it just got broader. I've enjoyed games of all calibre since I figured out that dice weren't just for eating, and have written prose ever since I was left unsupervised with some crayons next to a white wall. I got away with it by calling it "schoolwork" for as long as I could, and university helped me keep the charade going a while longer. Since my work began to get published, it's made all those long hours repainting the walls seem worth it.
