10 Reasons To Get Excited About Warhammer 40K: Darktide

Going by Vermintide's example, the class customisation in Darktide will likely be a system allowing for RPG-like specialisation and weapon upgrades. From the teaser and other promotional material, we can make a few deductions.

We see from the title poster that specialisation and even species variation does exist. We're shown what looks like an Imperial Zealot with a flamer, an Ogryn (basically what would happen if one of those extremely beefy GM cows was given a club), an Imperial Guardsman, and some kind of ranger, possibly even an Eldar (HERESY). This fits the standard set of party members in specialist, soldier, tank and sniper, but the trailer showcases something a little different.

This shows us four Guardsmen who, though all the same class, still have some variation between them. We see a weapons specialist with a plasma gun (Emperor save him), a melee specialist, a classic Guardsman, and what is clearly a rookie.

Judging by this, we may be getting more player choice than we initially expect, and that's never a bad thing.

My passion for all things Sci Fi goes back to my earliest days, when old VHS copies of Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet gripped my tiny mind with their big, noisy vehicles and terrifying puppets. I'd like to say my taste got more refined over the years, but between the Warhammer, Space Dandy and niche Star Wars EU books, perhaps it just got broader. I've enjoyed games of all calibre since I figured out that dice weren't just for eating, and have written prose ever since I was left unsupervised with some crayons next to a white wall. I got away with it by calling it "schoolwork" for as long as I could, and university helped me keep the charade going a while longer. Since my work began to get published, it's made all those long hours repainting the walls seem worth it.
