10 Reasons Why Quake Is The Hardest FPS Of All Time
9. Guns
Similarly to Counter-Strike, there is the Holy Trinity in Quake, which is made up of the rocket launcher, lightning gun, and railgun. The bread and butter of every Quake player, one must understand how to use all of them effectively if they hope to have any success in the game. Different pros have mastered each weapon; Cooller is unrivaled with the rocket launcher, k1llsen almost never misses a shot with the railgun, and serious has aimbot aim with the lightning gun.
A simple guideline to follow is that the rocket launcher is used for close-range battles, the lightning gun for mid-range battles, and the railgun for long-range battles. As straightforward as it is, however, it is surprising how difficult new players find it to follow and it can take some time before they are able to match the weapons to the situations.
In addition to the Holy Trinity, you have the gauntlet, machine gun, shotgun, nailgun or plasma gun, and tri-bolt or grenade launcher. All of these have their value and a good Quake player will use all of the guns at their disposal; the machine gun can finish off opponents with low HP at long range while the shotgun fulfils the same purpose at close range; the nailgun and plasma guns can cut apart opponents in narrow corridors; the tri-bolt and grenade launcher can block off choke points and punish opponents when they are picking up power items; the gauntlet can humiliate your opponent and tilt them off the face of the planet.
The challenge of Quake is that many of the weapons require you to predict the enemy's movements and nothing feels better than gibbing your opponent with a mid-air rocket.
