10 Reasons Why Sea Of Thieves Deserves A Second Chance
4. An Even Playing Field Keeps Things Fair For All Players
One aspect of Rare’s pirating adventure that's been heavily criticised is its lack of character progression. With all in-game rewards and items being purely cosmetic, your character’s stats and abilities are exactly the same on your first voyage as your hundredth. While this will undoubtedly make some players hesitant about diving into the game, this choice actually works tremendously in the game’s favour because it puts everyone on an even playing field.
No matter your experience, nothing will be too high a level for you to take on, nor will pirate legends have an unfair advantage against new sailors still earning their sea legs. Every ship and cutlass duel is evenly matched and gives everyone a fair shot at winning any battle they may face.
However, while combat is the same for all players, what separates a good player from great one is their mastery of these mechanics. Sword lunges and dashes, blocking and evading, and understanding how to aim canons and effectively board and anchor enemy ships can all be the difference between securing a big win or suffering an even bigger defeat.
The game never teaches you these techniques. It's up to you to master the tools you're given through practise.
