10 Reasons You're Wrong About Destiny

1. It's Something Different And Original

First and foremost, it's totally subjective how much you're going to let a game developer's previous work and pre-release marketing push dictate how you analyse the final product. Chances are if you're spending time pointing fingers at what something isn't, you're never going to be satisfied. This doesn't necessarily excuse the gargantuan Attack on Titan-sized PR spin Destiny received as 'the new Halo' or some title we were all going to get completely lost in for days on-end, but in the end if you can find enjoyment in what the game does do, you're going to be far better off. And what does Destiny do well? Well if you're a fan of exploring new worlds with a character that's a blank slate you can project onto, then what's here is a very involving, meticulously-crafted world that subjectively manages to pique interest just out of the sheer amount of effort that's gone into everything to do with its presentation. It seems fairly obvious to say - or hope, with fingers crossed - that you don't spend half a billion dollars on a world you're not then going to completely flesh out. Destiny is not the new Halo, despite what Activision, Sony and Microsoft want you to believe. Instead Bungie have laid the groundwork for their own 10 year plan, with just enough narrative elements scattered in-game and online to generate interest for what's to come. If that happens to be locked behind a paywall then that's a huge, almost console generation-damning indictment on where we are with games as an artform, but if they know what they're doing and can build a fervent community around it, that's definitely something that should be congratulated regardless.
