Rarely in RPGs does a game reward players for real-life knowledge and punish them for absurd ideas, but the cooking system in Breath of the Wild certainly does this and does this well. As the primary crafting system in the game, ranging from health-restoring food to helpful potions, Breath of the Wild surprises people by not giving any instructions, other than the fabled cookbook.
The game doesn’t help you, doesn’t dissuade you from making bad culinary choices, and has no in-game record of what recipes you’ve tried. This rewards people for being clever with their food, using ingredients that you’d find in real-life recipes and giving you a pile of dubious food for using monster parts or incompatible ingredients.
For those of us who aren’t trained chefs, experimentation is the best way to find what works and what doesn’t, and a little common sense goes a long way. Of course, if you’re finding it really tough, you could just join the masses and take to the internet…
