4. Balan Wonderworld
Because most modern games push for realistic graphics, it was refreshing to see Balan Wonderworld embrace the colourful and exaggerated style rampant in the 1990s.
Sadly, the developers put so much emphasis on the platformer's look, they neglected to make the gameplay fun. Simply put, Balan does nothing to stand out. Throughout the game, you walk around levels and collect stuff. That's it.
You could forgive the game a little if its selling point, the magically powered costumes, were innovative. Sadly, they are anything but. These garments give you very basic "powers" that allow you to jump higher or for a little longer than normal. If you die, you lose the costume you were wearing, meaning you have to go back and retrieve it in order to progress. If you obtained your outfit in a different world, you need to travel there to pick it up, forcing the game to have tons of unnecessary backtracking.
Since you can only keep hold of three costumes at a time, you will have to revisit the same dull levels repeatedly.
Even though Balan's Wonderworld received scathing reviews on all systems, the Switch version got it the worst, receiving the fourth lowest Metacritic score on the console.
