10 Ridiculous Video Game Puzzles Everyone Cheated For
4. The Zodiac Spear - Final Fantasy XII
If you thought Ocarina of Time's Water Temple was bulls***, just wait until you hear about Final Fantasy XII's Zodiac Spear solution.
In the original version of FFXII, the Zodiac Spear was the strongest weapon in the game, but the requirements for obtaining it were both obtuse and unfair enough that many fans still believe it was simply a ploy for Square Enix to sell more strategy guides.
In order to acquire the Spear, the player must not open four chests that appear earlier in the game, after which the Spear will appear in the Necrohol of Nabudis among a group of sixteen chests (it's the second from the left in the front row).
Given that many players didn't learn this solution until after they had already sunk many hours into the game - and likely already opened at least one of the chests - the "puzzle" was widely-criticised by fans for not playing fair or providing them with even the most basic hint.
Thankfully the quest was removed from the recent Zodiac Age re-release and the Spear was also much easier to obtain, but because we can't have nice things, Square Enix also ensured it was no longer the most powerful weapon in the game. Boo.
