No entry on this list is surely as infamous and disreputable as the iconically infuriatingly Water Temple from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

Not so much a single puzzle as it is an intricate labyrinth of inter-connected puzzles, it's the level that caused many players to throw their hands up in exasperation and take a long, hard break from an otherwise majestic game.

Water levels are already a bit of a groaner for most players at the best of times, but throwing in multi-tiered chambers (some of which are only accessible when the water level is changed), a ridiculous iron boots mechanic, rubbish aquatic combat and outrageously annoying bosses easily elevates the Water Temple to all-time video game infamy.

Between the confusing dungeon layout, painfully slow movement and wilfully obtuse in-water mechanics, it really feels like the game is laughing at the player at this point.

In recent years, producer Shigeru Miyamoto confessed he felt guilty for putting players through such a strenuous ordeal, and ultimately nerfed the difficulty significantly for future re-releases.
