10 RPG Video Game Fates Worse Than Death

It's not all monster slaying and adventuring with these RPG video games.

While death might not mean a lot to players in a video game, plenty of in-game characters can suffer greatly at the hands of the Grim Reaper.

Still, there are some fates in video games so horrible that those suffering from them would look at dying and think, "I'll have what they're having." One genre that really hones in on this is role-playing.

This wonderful subsection of gaming makes its bread and butter by providing an almost endless slew of options and freedom within its gameplay. As such, there are fates a wanderer can stumble upon that make death look like a picnic.

The following 10 are some of the absolute worst things you will ever see happening to a video game character. To them, death would be a mercy.

Warning! MAJOR SPOILERS ahead for The Witcher 3: Blood & Wine, Mother 3, Mass Effect 2, and Octopath Traveler.

10. The Imprisonment Spell - Baldur’s Gate

If you want to talk about role-playing, then it would be impossible not to discuss the exceptional Baldur's Gate series. This deep dive into the genre brings Dungeons & Dragons to the screen and is currently having a field day with the phenomenal release of Baldur's Gate 3.

You'd have to be living under a rock to have heard nothing about the game. But, as you're about to find out, that's something some characters are used to.

The Imprisonment Spell is a spell that imprisons its victim deep within the earth (shocking). Those who are hit with this magical attack are sealed in a state of suspended animation deep underground and kept alive with magic.

These unfortunate souls are completely unable to escape until someone casts Freedom in the exact location where the Imprisonment occurred. So, unless you get very lucky or have a friend nearby, you're there until the end of time. Yikes!

Naturally, this comes with some horrifying implications, as being stuck underground, unable to die, and possibly doomed to such a fate for eternity would be an endless nightmare.
