9. The Boss (Metal Gear Solid 3)
Metal Gear's bosses are odd, to say the least. In this military drama we've got a man who spits bees and astronaut who wants to watch the world burn (very literally).
We also have what is arguably one of the saddest boss fights in history. Snake's mother figure/mentor defects and turns against him, siding with the war-hungry Volgin and his nuke-firing tank.
However, after stopping him, you are then forced to deal with the woman who trained you. The greatest soldier in history, The Boss.
Under a timer, you need to beat her in a fight to the death in a field of flowers as soft music plays. You feel the weight of every punch and when you finally shoot her and the flowers fade from white to red you feel as Snake does. But then, when she explains why she did what she did, the guilt hits you hard.
You find out that she defected to gain intelligence, and had to stay and take the fall for all the things Volgin did, uniting the Soviets and Americans under a common enemy to prevent world war three.
Killing is the only way to keep the peace, and the truth of her mission will only ever be known by those in charge, Boss, and you.
She was a true patriot.
