10 Scariest Hidden Encounters In Open World Games

5. Reaper Leviathan - Subnautica

Unknown Worlds

Subnautica is a beautiful, mostly peaceful, romp through an underwater world of discovery and adventure. Now, I said mostly peaceful because there are a few scary fishies down there, waiting to bite your toes off and a deadly disease. And, of course, you have deal with the lonely existence of being the only survivor of your crashed spaceship.

The creators of Subnautica cited some fairly peaceful inspirations: Scuba Diving, James Cameron’s documentary filmography, and the desire to make a peaceful game in the wake of a lack of progress on fighting school shootings in the United States. Hence why there are almost no weapons in the game, and the major gun you can get is a stasis rifle, not a deadly firearm.

But, deep in the depths of the underwater world, are terrifying creatures who will absolutely kill you. The Reaper Leviathan, have a tendency to remain in the depths - but they will sometimes come up toward the surface looking for prey. That is - you.

The extra terrifying part is that they like to sweep in and attack you from behind, gripping you and spinning you around so that the last thing you see in your newly pee-filled scuba suit is their rows of sharp teeth.
