10 Scariest Retro Video Game Moments That Still Terrify Us Today

2. Zombies Appearing In Doorway - Resident Evil 2

With its hammy voice acting and typical 'evil corporate conspiracy' plot, much of the original Resident Evil trilogy seems a bit on the cheesy side by today's standards. But when it comes to using the technical tools at its disposal to terrify the player, then there are several moments throughout the series that will never lose their ability to shock. in Resident Evil 2, it's an accepted rule of the universe that zombies can't go through doors, and that once you hit that ominous loading screen in which you open a door hovering in blackness, you're essentially safe. But in a devilish, kind-of-fourth-wall-breaking moment, there's a scene in the game where zombies appear during this loading screen, and you see them coming straight for you from a temporary first-person perspective. You drop your controller as the dramatic orchestral chords kick in, then gather yourself and blast the devious bastards into the afterlife (or after-afterlife, what with zombies technically being creatures of the afterlife). After that moment you'll be totally overcome with paranoia when opening every other door in the game.
