Taking a break from supernatural horror, this urban legend was based more on the more mundane (but no less frightening) fear of modern technology being bent towards sinister purposes.

There's something inherently unsettling about something designed for entertainment being used with homicidal intentions (it's why Chucky remains a popular character despite having starred in far more bad films than good). That sense of disquiet was present in spades when it was reported that Saddam Hussein had imported 4000 PlayStation 2s to assist the mass manufacturing of WMDs

As stated by legendsrevealed.com, WorldNetDaily reported that the former Iraqi dictator purchased the PS2s with the intent of using their CPUs to assist in the guidance of the missiles that he was definitely, absolutely manufacturing (cough, cough). As legendsrevealed goes on to state, while the initial report was alarming it wasn't exactly grounded in either science or basic knowledge of international trade law. That, plus the eventual absence of any WMDs in Iraq, would eventually put the kibosh on this particular urban legend.
