On course to make his return to the Wii U later in 2015, it's the original SNES version that still holds up surprisingly well today in terms of the weight of the ships, feel of combat and a great cast of loveable characters. The SNES version was loaded with things to see and do, stages to crack and different coloured ships to blast apart, but aside from the Black Hole stage that was thoroughly trippy in its remixing of the game's menus, this flying slot machine sequence provides the best reason to dig out the old console. Many gamers know of Route 3, Asteroid 2's 'slot machine boss' as a thing you can't escape from (you get there by shooting a giant bird egg and flying directly into the resulting creature in the first place), but rather than thinking there's no way out aside from quitting the level, if you fire upon its lever you'll get a random amount of symbols that can occasionally line up. It can take any number of tries to finally get three 7's in a row, but afterwards the slot machine will explode, revealing the text 'The End' in garbled lettering - which you can shoot to spell out the actual final message of the game. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUSpqMtTMWU It's all very weird, from the flying gambling machine to the variety of repurposed scores ('When The Saints Go Marching In' appears at one point), but remains one of the many reasons Nintendo's titles have such endless replayability to this day.
