The mechanic of offering players choices that matter has become increasingly popular. Not only is it a great way to ensure players truly become engrossed in an unfolding plot, but it's also a big boon for replayability.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey boasts numerous examples of this. Deimos can be a particularly challenging boss battle for our protagonist, but it's also possible to not only spare them but redeem them. Your troubled sibling can break free of the Cult's malevolent influence, but the player must take care to speak positively to and of Deimos throughout the title, as well as fighting to rescue him in the aftermath of the Battle of Pylos.

Remaining on Deimos' side throughout (even though they aren't receptive to your goodwill for almost the entire game) is well worth the effort, narratively speaking. Choices the player makes during the campaign will impact how many of their family members will remain, and in Deimos' case, beseeching them not to fight will be successful if you have done this correctly. It's a dramatic about-turn at the very end of the story, and getting there is so convoluted that some players may not even know it's possible.
