Later to be revealed as the Flame Emperor, Edelgard becomes the mortal enemy of the Church of Seiros, with whom Byleth sides by 'default' on various potential story routes. At the culmination of Dimitri's Azure Moon path, she adopts her monstrous Hegemon Husk form, a final boss with true inhuman power. She is painted as a despot and meets a violent end in multiple scenarios, but there is a way to follow the Empire's path and truly absorb her point of view instead.

It's easy to miss, but as the Black Eagles' teacher, players must build their Support rating with Edelgard to C+ ahead of Chapter 11. Only by doing so will they then be able to talk with her and travel to the Empire's capital, and thereby be able to elect to protect her, defying Rhea's command, during the battle in the Holy Tomb.

After this, Byleth will fight for the Empire for the rest of the game's events, and the ending (which will change somewhat depending on other choices and friendships made) will see Edelgard live out her reign as a successful emperor, rather than being vilified and killed by the Church's forces.
