10 Secretly Powerful Video Game NPCs
3. The Hermit - The Witcher 3: Blood And Wine
Geralt of Rivia is more than used to dealing with NPCs, as the character spends most of his time either chatting to them, cutting them down, or playing a nice game of Gwent with them. But, there are times when he is taken by surprise, and this seemingly harmless older man in the Blood and Wine expansion pack is one of the best examples.
You'll encounter this water-dwelling hermit during the "There Can Be Only One" side quest, which sees Geralt tasked with proving his chivalry. The old hermit seems at first like just another quest giver, with a non-impressive appearance and a casual demeanor. But, once you return to him at the end of the mission, that rug gets pulled out from under you.
The character is incredibly powerful, as they challenge you to a boss fight and bust out some shocking water-based attacks that would make even Poseidon quiver. It's a tough fight that will take you a few attempts if you're not careful; a big departure from his original appearance.
In the end, it turns out that this Hermit wasn't even a hermit at all, and was actually the legendary Lady of the Lake. They only took the Hermit form to confuse Geralt by appearing similar to a character he met in the first Witcher game. Talk about catfishing.
