There are times when an intro doesn’t need to make sense. It can simply be stupidly entertaining and that’s enough. Bonus points if it creates a little mystery. BattleBlock Theatre does both.

You’re told to shut your face and listen. You do. You’re introduced to Hatty Hattington and his Friend-ship of friends (puns abound). A voyage is embarked on. A storm brews up. A scary whale makes an appearance. The ship is shipwrecked on a strange island with a strange theatre and the crew is captured by...cats? Hatty gets fitted with a hat which doesn’t sit quite well with him and off we go to save him.

As hilarious and beautifully quirky as the opening is, thanks in no small part to the absolutely phenomenal narration, the real genius lies in the fact that by having the theatre performances serve as the stage for the game’s levels, and having the escalating difficulty correspond with an ever more demanding audience, the intro is not only fun but integral to the experience.

In the end, though, it’s an intro that is tremendously creative, enormous fun to watch, and the perfect compliment to to an equally fun and creative game.
