10 Shocking Video Game Moments Players CHOSE To See
6. The Walking Dead - Sawing Off Lee's Arm
Having released games since 2005, it wasn’t until 2012 that Telltale truly made their breakthrough with The Walking Dead. Based within the comic book continuity, you played convicted criminal Lee Everett, who becomes a father-figure to recently orphaned Clementine amongst the initial zombie outbreak.
For a company founded by ex-LucasArts staff after they stopped making adventure games, it was fitting that Telltale Games revitalised the genre, establishing the now widely adopted format where your choices impact how its story unfolds across different episodes.
After being bitten in episode 4, Lee is presented with a choice. You can cut off his arm with a surgical saw or keep it and convince the others to closely watch you in case you turn. Depending on previous choices, Lee either does this alone or get helped by an additional character.
Players who watched the TV show know that the amputation method worked to save Hershel Greene. As such, there were grounds to believe this attempt might work and what followed is a difficult watch.
Sadly, it proved too late for Lee and he eventually succumbs at the end of the series, leaving players a second difficult choice of having Clementine shoot him or letting him turn. It’s an emotional journey and one which holds up to this day.
