10 Shocking Video Game Twists You Never Saw Coming
3. Shadow of the Colossus - The Price of Salvation
Over the last half-decade or so, Shadow of the Colossus has become the game of choice of hipsters everywhere. It wasn't widely played and it wasn't widely understood, which are two seminal preferences of hipsters. This recent surge of interest has raised awareness of the game and driven others to play it, which is a good thing because it's a great gaming experience. Honestly, I wasn't very good at it, and wasn't "moved emotionally and spiritually" like a lot of other players with conspicuously ironic facial hair and pin-striped fedoras, but the ending was still as utterly unforgettable.
The story isn't super-complex and requires little exposition, which is good because there's no real dialogue. The love of your life is dead, and a demon grants you an opportunity to revive her. So you run around slaying giant, hairy monsters in an effort to bring her back to life. Pretty standard so far, right? Well, after you finish the last beastie, you actually transform into a hideous colossus. Your character becomes the very thing he's been trying to defeat. After you have been contained and destroyed by your home tribe, your lover comes back to life. By sacrificing yourself, your girlfriend gets to live. How shockingly thoughtful!
