10 Small Video Games That Left HUGE Impacts
5. Night In The Woods
The quaint small town of Possum Springs in indie side-scroller
Night In The Woods is home to many tragedies and secrets. However, stories of
ghosts, folklore, and the town’s economic downfall are merely the backdrop to a
story that’s about enjoying the little things.
The game begins as college dropout Mae returns to her hometown to reunite with her friends and family as she attempts to reclaim the life she left behind. But Possum Springs isn’t the same as when she left. Her friends have moved on with their lives, beloved businesses have shut their doors, and Mae is treated as an outcast because of an event in her past – and there’s a severed arm outside the diner, too.
From here, players explore the town and interact with the locals. Who Mae talks to and spends her time with is entirely up to players, but the choices made don’t have any impact on the overarching narrative. And that’s the point.
Night In The Woods is about confronting our insignificance on a cosmic scale and attempting to find meaning in the things around us. For a game about quirky anthropomorphic animals, Night In The Woods effectively tackles many hard-hitting subjects.
