10 Most Sought-After Collector's Editions In Gaming

8. Mortal Kombat Tournament Edition

NetherRealm Studios churned up enough hype about their Mortal Kombat franchise reboot to justify putting together a couple of pricey limited editions, knowing that longtime fans of the veteran brawler would pay up for the exclusive merchandise. The two more readily-available box sets - regional variants of the Kollector's Edition - played it safe and included an art book, digital extras and a statuette of sorts; one, an unremarkable piece depicting Scorpion and Sub-Zero in battle; the other, a more interesting book-end set, also featuring old skull-face and the ice man. But for those with more cash to splash, there was a far more intriguing option, the Mortal Kombat Tournament Edition. Eschewing the plastic toys and forgettable art book, this time your money went towards something more useful: an impressively-constructed arcade-style fight stick, making the Tournament Edition the easy choice for serious kombatants. We're accustomed to seeing bundled merchandise with the build quality of a plastic My Little Pony lunchbox, but this fight stick is the real deal. Made by peripheral big dogs PDP, the Tournament Edition unit is made of the same sort of fibreboard composite, plexiglass and veneer as you would have seen in classic arcade cabinets, employing industry specialists Suzo-Happ for the controller components. The result is a fight stick with the heft and quality of a premium product, finished in a classic Mortal Kombat design style. It's pretty light on extras, but hard to resist for anyone who knows their Shang Tsungs from their Shao Kahns. What's in the box: Mortal Kombat game; Tournament Edition fight stick; Downloadable avatar items and Klassic skin for in-game character.
