Starfield's gameplay trailer begins with a quote from author Anatole France: "The wonder is, not that the field of stars is so vast, but that we have measured it."* We get the feeling that another sci-fi Frenchman, and all those who went before and after him, would agree. A profoundly optimistic humanist outlook has, after all, been at the core of Star Trek's own bold mission since its creation.

It's all well and good having lofty philosophical aspirations, however, but you do actually have to have the means to get to the stars in the first place. For that, Starfield takes ship design to the next level with near endless possibilities for creation (or purchase/stealing if you prefer).

Whilst some of the bridges and cockpits in Starfield look like those from other franchises, a few scream Star Trek. It was Taiyō Astroneering's cockpit design that really caught our eye. This Starfield company is already known for their luxurious cruise-liner starships, which already fits with that Next Generation and Lost Era comfort aesthetic.

The arrangement of the chairs in Taiyō cockpits is surely inspired by the same Star Trek bridge design — Captain in the middle with two seats to the side, all upholstered in a plush cream white (with arm rests), accompanied by a very Trek-looking set of consoles at the fore, and plenty of space. With such lavishness and size, we couldn't help but also think of the TNG-era Runabouts and shuttles.

*"Ce qui est admirable, ce n'est pas que le champ des étoiles soit si vaste, c'est que l'homme l'ait mesuré." – Anatole France, Le jardin d'Épicure, 1894
