8. Cannon Fodder
While perhaps not as hard as other games on our list, Cannon Fodder earns its place by doing something few war titles have truly done before or since: realism. Graphically it isn't exactly life-like, but the game has a health system reminiscent of the real world, with both the player and enemies being fragile enough to die in a single hit; unless they were lucky enough to be caught in an arm, in which case it would take two. Players control a squad of men differing in number on each map and tasked with wiping out all enemies black ops style (as in actual black ops, not the poorly titled Call Of Duty game). The main challenges arise out of not being able to see where your enemies are until it is too late, particularly in later levels where they are able to wear camouflage or hide in buildings, as it makes the possibility of walking into an ambush all too high. There is also the added difficulty of only having as many lives as you have soldiers, whereas the enemy sometimes has bases capable of respawning troops until it is found and destroyed. Oh, and progression through levels quickly results in players going against rocket-launchers and tanks, while most of the time the best you have is a small machine-gun. Unlike most of the games on our list there is a code given at the start of each level that can be entered into the start menu and makes it possible to continue where you left off next time you pick up the control. However, Cannon Fodder remains one of the most difficult war based games to date, and we all know how bloated that genre is, so the title gets a place of honour on our list.
