10 Surprising Ways Video Games Are Actually Good For You

6. Improve Surgical Skills

Everyone knows that medical school costs a fortune and the whole process of training to become a surgeon takes years to complete. Our advice? Play video games instead. Researchers at the University of Texas tested high school gamers, college gamers and medical residents to determine who would perform best at virtual surgery. The participants were tested in 32 categories, including timing, pressure on the controls and hand-eye coordination. Worryingly, the results showed that the high school gamers who played two hours of video games every day outperformed the medical residents who only had limited gaming experience. The validity of the study is questionable as there is obviously a huge distinction between performing virtual surgery and actually cutting people open in real life, but it does clearly demonstrate the way that regular video games can enhance both cognitive and motor skills. Still, is any one else worried that high school students are better surgeons than trained medical residents? No? Just us then!
