10 Survival Horror Video Games You Must Play Before Halloween

7. The Evil Within

An underrated gem, 2014's The Evil Within wasn't a perfect game, but it was a rare third-person survival horror title that came out just before the industry realised that the genre was bankable again.

Picking up the ball that Resident Evil dropped with the fifth game onwards, Tango Gameworks' release still had plenty of action at the heart of it, but its commitment to surreal psychological horror always kept the experience rooted in the visual iconography of the genre.

Unfortunately, the game was let down by a few technical issues. While many players took umbrage with the letterbox black bars that limited your field of view, it was the botched frame-rate and poor controls that really dragged the experience down.

Thankfully, patches sorted out the majority of these problems in the months following the game's release, making The Evil Within a more refined title now than it ever was at launch.
